Tully Art Deco Far North Queensland

Tully, about a 60km drive south of Innisfail in tropical Far North is another wonderful intact Art Deco and Modernist designed town. It is also one of the wettest town in Australia. Walk the main street and the side streets and there are a wealth of modernist gems, and they are offset by the dramatic tropical rain forest that surrounds the township.

This building was likely designed before the war, but as was built to the same plans afterward, a common practice with so many buildings from the period. The finial details and the original name still exist and the stepping on the top of the facade all make for an interesting design.

Many of the Modernist buildings in Tully and the region are painted vivid colours, such as this one featured. It really adds to the impact of the designs.

Grand Hotel Bega

If there is such a symbol and icon of Art Deco in Australia, it has got to be the hotel, or "pub". Right around Australia throughout many a town there are wonderful examples of Art Deco hotels.

The Grand Hotel in Bega, Victoria is no exception. The colour of the brick work is a standout feature and the large corner brick curve as well as the vertical detailing on each side of the building are interesting features.

Take a closer look under the eves and there are a series of very interesting period detailing as shown in this series of photographs.

Cooma Shops and Residence - Streamline Art Deco

I enjoy country towns for the modernist designs that they offer. I came across this wonderful example of a streamline design in Cooma, New South Wales.

The four impressive curves are offset by cube glass decoration feature walls. The fence also echoes the buildings style as well.

Atherton Art Deco Former Service Station

This former Service Station in the township of Atherton, Far North Queensland has an impressive central mast as its main feature.

The ravages of the wet tropical region are on show with the growth of different mosses that appear on the building.
