I love Henty House! It has served as one of my main inspirations over the years and I am always finding new perspectives and interpretations in which to make photographs of this iconic building. The entire precinct in which Henty House stands, known as Civic Square is about to undergo major redevelopment. This will be a major change and bring to an end of an era to the original fabric of the precinct since it was developed in the latter part of the 20th Century. Check it out while you can!
I love the off the main highway places as you never know what you may find in the pursuit of Modernist buildings. One day in 2009 I spent an entire day from 8am-7pm shooting the wonderful buildings of Innisfail. I am still in the process of processing my photographs, but I have many buildings of Innisfail up on my website that can be viewed by clicking here: http://www.tryanphotos.com/Projects/Innisfail-Region-Art-Deco

Innisfail is an amazing township for those who love Modernist design, it's located in tropical Far North Queensland, about an hours drive south of Cairns. The sheer number of commercial, and residential Art Deco and Modernist buildings are amazing for a township that has a population of roughly 10,000. After a tropical cyclone destroyed many of the buildings in Innisfail in 1918 many new structures were designed with concrete in the Modernist style. I just love how the buildings of Innisfail, especially many of the concrete homes have their own vernacular, they take on their own persona, and are totally unique, perhaps they should be known as Innisdeco!

Even in the short period of time since 2009, which is just 3 years ago, many changes happen. I used to think this home would look amazing done up with a lick of paint, and in 2012 it happened! Amazing what a lick of paint does! Sadly in just 3 years several iconic buildings and structures have been demolished in Innisfail.

Sometimes when you think you have discovered all the Art Deco buildings in an area, there is always one around the corner to surprise you, and sometimes really amaze. This was the case with this wonderful streamline art Deco building near Innisfail, tropical Far North Queensland. Innisfail and the surrounding towns such as Tully & Ingham have a wonderful diversity of Art Deco and Modernist buildings.

The topical North has some very interesting buildings, many designed for the tropical climate. I have, over the past several years dedicated many hours to photographing and documenting the region, whilst I don't have all of my collection uploaded, I continue to add them to my blog and website on a regular basis. Check out the growing collection from the region on my website here
Ingham in North Queensland has a wonderful diversity of mid 20th Century buildings, including this little gem, the Ingham squash courts. The building dates around the 1960/70s and I love how the building uses repetitious patterns and how the blinds also give the building a striking vertical flow. I love the typeface of this building, typeface always plays a large part of what I do when I go about photographing buildings.
These stunning flats located in the suburb of Brighton, Melbourne were designed by architect, I.G Anderson. He designed many great examples of Art Deco architecture in Victoria as well as Tasmania. A notable example in Melbourne city that he designed included Lonsdale House that was only recently demolished. Check out these flats named "Dorijo" in Fitzroy, Melbourne, also designed by Anderson. Note that Ostend, Lonsdale House and Dorijo are all adorned with tower turrets.
The simple no fuss lines of this telephone exchange building (circa 1960s) are to be found the Far North Queensland township of Millaa Millaa. The period typeface logo is great, and so are the vertical blinds that were popular in post war design throughout many buildings in the tropics to protect them from the ravages of the tropics. Being that Millaa Millaa is located in the tropical highlands the blinds visually demonstrate the ravages of moisture with just a little bit off moss growth!
This Art Deco complex in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy is an amazing design, and were designed by I.G Anderson who did many homes and flats in Melbourne and he also designed a wonderful streamline commercial building in Tasmania. Many of his buildings had stylised turrets on the top of the building, and Dorijo is no different. Others included Lonsdale House (demolished 2010) and Ostend flats in Brighton, Melbourne.

The historic Art Deco Millaa Millaa Cheese factory was demolished recently.

The landmark Art Deco building in the township of Millaa Millaa, the former Millaa Millaa Cheese Factory, has been demolished. This is sad news for a township that doesn't have many historic buildings left. This demolition is short sighted as Millaa Millaa isn't the thriving town, with many other historic shops having been lost in the past few decades.

Reports may have suggested the building was an eyesore, but I wonder what will replace the historic cheese factory at a time when the township has lost many of it's buildings and services. Likely, 10 foot tropical grass will take its place. Have there been any ideas as to what will replace this building in order to draw more business and tourists to the town. Without such buildings as the Millaa Millaa Cheese Factory, the township loses part of it's social and built history.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6908739405830944727.post-35487149275890629742012-01-21T00:00:00.000+11:002012-01-21T00:00:05.295+11:00"Australian Modern" publication to feature Henty House & Civic Square, Launceston

The Long Beach Bathing Pavilion designed in 1962 has been recognised for it's heritage values. Located in the Hobart suburb of Sandy Bay it's been officially listed on the has been listed on the Tasmanian heritage register. Architect, Dirk Bolt. Bolt designed many mid-20th century buildings in Hobart, including 10 Murray Street Government Office tower block approved for demolition.

The use of concrete block in designing the Bathing Pavilion was a typical trait in his designs, evident in several of his other works I've documented photographically around Hobart and in Canberra. The interior of the building is home to Surf Life Saving Tasmania and public toilets. The original design was to see the building have 2 levels, with the upper deck having being used a restaurant. The facade of the bathing pavilion has a series of pre-cast concrete panels with abstract illustrations designed by artist, Ron Sinclair. The panels were created on-site, having been cast on the beach fronting the Bathing pavilion

The Brustlist style Bathing Pavilion stands as an important and rate example of its kind in Tasmania. I have done an extensive photographic study of Bolt's designs around Hobart, stay tuned for upcoming posts on some of the wonderful designs I've captured through the lens of his works.
