Tully, about a 60km drive south of Innisfail in tropical Far North is another wonderful intact Art Deco and Modernist designed town. It is also one of the wettest town in Australia. Walk the main street and the side streets and there are a wealth of modernist gems, and they are offset by the dramatic tropical rain forest that surrounds the township.
This building was likely designed before the war, but as was built to the same plans afterward, a common practice with so many buildings from the period. The finial details and the original name still exist and the stepping on the top of the facade all make for an interesting design.
Many of the Modernist buildings in Tully and the region are painted vivid colours, such as this one featured. It really adds to the impact of the designs.
