Bega Base Hospital - New South Wales

Bega Hospital is a great example of 20th Century hospital architecture design, I love the space around the hospital, one would have imagined that this space would have been for extensions of the hospital if required.

Stunning Art Deco Albury Home

Albury in New South Wales has many wonderful examples of Modernist architecture, and this includes many fine Art Deco homes including this stunning example.  It surely has to rank as one of the top examples of residential Art Deco architecture in Australia.

NSW Highlands Art Deco Country Style - Berridale

Upon travelling around the Snowy Mountains region, I spotted this interesting Art Deco building in the township of Berridale, just outside of Kosciuszko National Park.  It was a least expected treat to find this Art Deco building.  I am only guessing but it looks as if it could have been the local theatre, with such an interesting and dramatic entrance.  The length of the building suggests too that it may just as well was used as a theatre.

Warilla Beach House - The Spaceship has Landed

Check this wonderful Beach House in the seaside township of Warilla, a short drive south of Wollongong. What struck me about the many coastal towns was the rate of development and with it the demolition of 20th Century buildings. I went in search of this wonderful example of mid 20th Century design because I had read that that it was at risk of demolition. To my knowledge the beach home still stands, but I am not sure if it's still at risk. It was a real joy to come across and it really stands out as a striking example of modernist beach house design.

Currabubula War Memorial Hall

Thirty kilometres south of Tamworth, New South Wales is the small township of Currabubula. There are so many examples of War Memorial Halls around Australia, and what makes them fascinating is that they are not just in the major cities, but in small country towns as well. The other interesting point of note is that most were designed in the Modernist style.

The Currabubula War Memorial Hall is a bold design and the use of different coloured bricks add visual interest. Another sticking design element is the typeface on the building. The hall stands alone on main road and this adds to the visual appeal of the building. I also love the "rawness" of the building in that you can see that the facade is solid brick, and yet the rest of the structure looks to be built of corrugated iron.

Goulburn Evening Penny Post Art Deco

Goulburn has many wonderful examples of Art Deco style in it's long main street, and it's well worth taking the time to check out the main drag and side streets as there are many interesting examples of Modernism to view. This building is an impressive example of proportions and symmetry as opposed to over decoration.

Newcastle City Administion Council Building - Brutalistm at its best

The Newcastle City Administion Council Building is a stunning example of Brutalism, it was opened in 1977. As you drive along the main street into Newcastle the spaceship like structure stands bold and you wouldn't fail not to see it. It stands on an open civic space (common in many Government Brutalist designs) and for me it's up there as one of the best 20th Century designs in Australia. It highlights the wonderful and abstract qualities and geometric lines and shapes that can be gained from the building medium of concrete.

Art Deco Commonwealth Bank - Bellingen

This is the second of two Art Deco banks in the township of Bellingen. This one if very interested for its use of cream/yellow brick. So many small towns around Australia have some fascinating Modernist architecture. It's a shame that the period isn't as well considered as other periods are.

Former Art Deco Bank - Bellingen

This wonderful streamline Modernist/Art Deco building is in the main street of Bellingen, New South Wales. I can only assume it was originally designed for a banking business. This forms a series of recent entries on my blog that explore modernist Bank design throughout Australia. This is one of two interesting Art Deco building in the township, the other being the Commonwealth Bank.

Tenterfield Art Deco Commonwealth Bank

Tenterfield, situated in inland Northern New South Wales is small town full of character. There are several Modernist buildings in the town including various small shop facades, a wonderful streamline brick hotel, a bold post war church, and 2 stripped classical art deco banks.

The Commonwealth Bank style is a common one throughout many Australian towns, and this stripped classical art deco style is one I have come across many a time.

Indeed they make a bold statement as you gaze at the main facade and enter through the central front door.

Richmod Art Deco Decoration

Early Art Deco buildings often were adorned with ornament compared to their streamline cousins. This detail shot of a bank in Richmond, New South Wales is such an example. I have seen this similar design on quite a number of buildings now throughout Australia.

Halsbury House - Goulburn

This fine streamline art deco building is one of many Art Deco buildings in the township of Goulburn. Whilst the main sprawling street of Goulburn hosts most of its Art Deco treasures, it's always worth a wonder down the side streets, as gems such as Halsbury House are to be found.

Bendigo Art Deco Streamline Home

This stunning example of a streamline Modern home is located in Bendigo. There are a number of Modernist homes and commercial buildings in the township, but this home would certainly gain the attention of the passer by with it's stunning white finish and multiple use of curves that are evident throughout the building and stepped fence detailing. I really like how the chimnney brickwork has been left unrendered part of the way down. It really helps to emphasis the chimmney as a feature in itself and draws the eye to other features such as the main entrance steel frame window detailing. The same original brickwork appears throughout the properties fence details as well.

Rivers Superstore Singleton

This impressive Art Deco building stands in the main street of Singleton. It gracefully curves around the street and its austere bulk is broken up by a series of sun protected windows and interesting brick detailing in the central upper curve.
