Cairns Base Hospital

This imposing bulk is the Cairns Base Hospital, being one of the main hospital's for the region (the other being Townsville Hospital).

By the looks of the detailing the build date would be in the 1960s period. It's interesting to note that the balconies don't seem to actually serve a functional purpose as there are no access points to them. Possibly they were added as a decorative element and/or to add a shade barrier to the interior areas from the tropical sun. They remind me of art deco and post war hospital's that often had exterior balconies.
